Who Created the New Orleans City Park?

Covering a whopping 1300 acres, New Orleans City Park was founded after businessman John McDonogh willed the land to the City of New Orleans in 1850. In 1854, the 4th District Court officially declared approximately 100 acres of the land as a park that would eventually become known as New Orleans City Park.

The park rapidly grew in popularity and size, and by the early 1900s, it was one of the most visited parks in the country. Today, visitors who are sightseeing in New Orleans can enjoy a number of different activities including a golf course, an amusement park, and several miles of walking and biking trails perfect for exploring the natural beauty of the park. Thanks to the efforts of the city, the New Orleans City Park has become one of the most beloved landmarks around.

Museums

There are several New Orleans attractions to see when visiting City Park. The park is home to three different museums, each with its own unique exhibits. The New Orleans Museum of Art features a wide variety of art from around the world, while the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden is a perfect place to enjoy some peace and quiet amidst beautiful sculptures.

For the kids (or the young at heart), the Louisiana Children’s Museum is a must-see. With interactive exhibits on everything from science to history, it’s a great place to learn about the world around us. These museums offer visitors a variety of different exhibits to explore, making for a fun and educational day out in the park.

Café Du Monde is an iconic coffee shop that specializes in its signature dark-roasted Coffee and Beignets. These fried fritters were introduced in Louisiana by the Acadians and were originally filled with fruit. Today, the beignets are fried and dusted with powdered sugar. Generally served in threes, this flavorful pastry makes for one delicious breakfast or snack!
