The History of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival began as a new venture in 1970 when George Wein, a pianist and jazz promoter, was hired by the New Orleans Hotel Motel Association to promote tourism through music in New Orleans.
Some of the celebrities who performed at the inaugural of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival included artists like Al Hirt, Clifton Chenier, and others. However, Wein’s aim for this event went beyond simply just music. He also suggested the creation of a “Heritage Fair” that would feature food stalls serving local cuisine, as well as New Orleans-inspired arts & crafts to receive further enjoyment from the event.
