If you’re looking for truly memorable things to do in New Orleans, then the locally renowned Red Dress Run might just be for you. This annual “race” is held to raise money for charity, and participants are encouraged to dress up in red dresses (or other red attire) as they run through the streets of the New Orleans French Quarter and Marigny.
Due to COVID restrictions, this one-of-a-kind festivity was forced to cancel in 2020 and 2021, making this year’s comeback much more exciting to look forward to. So even if you’re not a runner, it’s worth checking out this event just to see the spectacle!
What is the Red Dress Run?
Annually hosted by the local drinking club, the Hash House Harriers, this 2-mile run offers tourists and locals alike an opportunity for some fun and a way to support a good cause – as long as you’re 21 and over.
This year, participants begin the run at Crescent Park (2300 N Peters Street) in the Bywater/Marigny area, and the event can even be spotted in parts of the French Quarter in the early afternoon as the festivities trickle in. Traditionally, this local run falls on the second Saturday of August each year — so mark your calendars, because what goes better together than beer, goggles, and dress-up clothes?
Red Dress Run Charity
Even though the Red Dress Run seems like any other creative marathon, it’s also a way to give back to the community. Every year, the event raises money for numerous charities, and 100% of what’s collected helps fund programs and services that improve the quality of life for those in need.
Organizations such as the Kinglsey House, Cancer Crusaders, and the Epilepsy Foundation of Louisiana have all benefited from the generosity of those who participate in the Red Dress Run. And by coming together and supporting one another, we can make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Admission is $65, with an online service fee costing $4. Prices can also vary depending on how early you sign up for this occasion. So don’t wait — register today and help make a difference.
Red Dress Run 2022: Rules & Schedule
This annual event starts on August 13th 2022, and the running itself will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will go on until 4 p.m. that same day. While the run is sure to be a blast, participants are also encouraged to get there early to enjoy some of the delicious beer that will be available starting at 9:30 a.m.
Everyone must abide by the rules and be at least 21 years of age to participate in the run. Wearing a red dress is a must (hence the name Red Dress Run), and runners are advised to put on a different dress every time they choose to take part in the event.
