Every city and cemetery bus tour departs with a local, expert guide who was born and raised in the greater New Orleans area. They do not read scripts. They share personal stories, point out hidden details, and answer every question — because that is what makes the difference between a forgettable bus ride and a tour you will talk about for years.

What You Will See on the City Bus Tour

A guided route through the neighborhoods, landmarks, and local stories that define New Orleans.

Stop 1

French Quarter

The French Quarter is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, established in 1718 as the original city of Nouvelle-Orléans. Our city tour takes you through its cobblestone streets, past the ornate cast-iron balconies of Royal Street, along the bustling energy of Bourbon Street, and into the heart of Jackson Square. Your guide will explain the French, Spanish, and Creole architectural influences that shaped the Quarter — and why the buildings you see today are mostly Spanish Colonial rather than French, a detail most visitors never learn without a knowledgeable guide.

Jackson Square & St. Louis Cathedral

Jackson Square is the historic center of the French Quarter and the city itself. Anchored by the St. Louis Cathedral — the oldest continuously active Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States — the square is surrounded by the Cabildo (where the Louisiana Purchase was signed in 1803), the Presbytère, and the Pontalba Buildings. Our guide will share the history of Andrew Jackson's controversial legacy and the square's transformation from a military parade ground to the vibrant gathering place it is today.

Originally established as a Native American trading post before 1791, the French Market is the oldest public market in the United States. Our tour passes through this open-air marketplace where you can see vendors selling local produce, handmade crafts, hot sauce, and New Orleans souvenirs. The market stretches six blocks from the Café Du Monde to the edge of the Marigny neighborhood, and your guide will point out the architectural details that tell the story of its 230-year evolution.

Café Du Monde

Since 1862, Café Du Monde has served its famous beignets and chicory coffee to generations of locals and visitors. Located at the edge of Jackson Square, this open-air café is one of the most photographed landmarks in New Orleans. Your guide will explain the French origins of the beignet, why chicory was added to New Orleans coffee during the Civil War, and the best times to visit if you want to avoid the line after the tour.

Garden District

The Garden District is the crown jewel of New Orleans residential architecture. Our guided bus tour takes you past the antebellum mansions that line St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street — Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian homes built by the American newcomers who arrived after the Louisiana Purchase and chose to build uptown rather than live among the Creole families of the French Quarter. Your guide will point out the homes of famous residents past and present, including Anne Rice's former residence and the house used in filming 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.'

Magazine Street stretches six miles from Canal Street through the Lower Garden District, the Garden District, and uptown. Known for its eclectic mix of independent boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and restaurants, Magazine Street represents the local, neighborhood side of New Orleans that most tourists never see from the French Quarter. Our city bus tour gives you a guided introduction to the street's highlights so you know exactly where to return on your own.

St. Louis Cemetery — New Orleans Cemetery Tour

No New Orleans city tour is complete without a stop at one of the city's famous above-ground cemeteries. St. Louis Cemetery is among the most historically significant burial grounds in North America. Known as 'Cities of the Dead,' New Orleans cemeteries use above-ground tombs because the city's high water table makes traditional below-ground burial impractical. Your guide will walk you through the cemetery, explaining the elaborate mausoleum architecture, the history of the families interred there, and the cultural traditions — including the jazz funeral — that make New Orleans burial practices unique in the United States.

This cemetery stop transforms our standard city sightseeing tour into a true city and cemetery experience, combining the architectural beauty and cultural depth of the cemetery with the broader New Orleans city tour. It is one of the most popular and highest-rated portions of the entire tour based on our customer reviews.

City & Cemetery New Orleans Bus Tour FAQ

Everything to know before you board the Cajun Encounters city and cemetery bus tour.

How long is the New Orleans city bus tour?

The city and cemetery bus tour lasts approximately 2 hours. You will cover roughly 25 miles of the city, including the French Quarter, Garden District, Magazine Street, and a walking stop at St. Louis Cemetery.

Which cemetery does the city tour visit?

Our city bus tour includes a guided walking stop at St. Louis Cemetery, one of the most famous above-ground cemeteries in New Orleans. Your guide will explain the unique burial traditions, architecture, and notable residents.

What should I wear on the city bus tour?

Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven surfaces because the cemetery stop involves walking on gravel and stone pathways. The bus is air-conditioned, so a light layer is recommended. Sunscreen and sunglasses are suggested for the outdoor cemetery portion.

Is this a hop-on hop-off tour?

No. Our New Orleans city bus tour is a fully guided, round-trip experience with a live local guide. Unlike hop-on hop-off services, you ride with the same guide for the entire tour, receiving narrated commentary and a guided cemetery walk. The bus brings you back to your original pickup location.

Are there bathroom and food stops?

Yes. The tour includes a comfort stop where you can use restrooms and purchase food or drinks. The stop is incorporated into the tour route so it does not interrupt the experience.

What areas of New Orleans does the tour cover?

The city bus tour covers the French Quarter, Jackson Square, the French Market, Café Du Monde, the Garden District, St. Charles Avenue, Magazine Street, and St. Louis Cemetery. Your guide may also point out additional landmarks depending on the route and current conditions.

Can I bring alcohol or beverages on the bus?

Non-alcoholic beverages in sealed containers are welcome on the bus. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on board for safety and liability reasons. Water is recommended.

Where do you pick up for the city tour?

We offer pickup from select hotels in the French Quarter and downtown New Orleans. When you book, our team will confirm your nearest pickup point. Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure.

Do you offer private city bus tours?

Yes. Cajun Encounters offers private city bus tours for groups of all sizes. Private tours can be customized to focus on specific neighborhoods, themes, or interests. Contact our group sales team at 504-834-1770 or info@cajunencounters.com for availability and pricing.

Can I combine the city bus tour with a swamp tour?

Absolutely. We offer a combo discount when you book a city and cemetery bus tour with any swamp tour. This is our most popular combination — take the morning swamp tour to see alligators and Louisiana wildlife, then explore the city on the afternoon bus tour. Ask about current pricing when you book.

Is the bus wheelchair accessible?

Wheelchair-accessible buses are available with advance notice. Please contact us when booking so we can arrange the appropriate vehicle for your needs.

What happens if it rains?

Tours operate rain or shine. Because the majority of the tour takes place on a climate-controlled bus, rain has minimal impact on the experience. For the cemetery walking portion, your guide will adjust the route as needed for safety. In the rare event of severe weather cancellation, you will receive a full refund or the option to reschedule.

Booked this tour after we were let down by Viator for a booking on the Steamboat Natchez. I'm so very glad we did. Our guide, Butch, was amazing! His local knowledge, wit and care were second to none. Have been on a lot of bus tours in a lot of countries but this was hands down the best!

One of the best tours we have ever been on. History of New Orleans was explained in detail. Loved seeing the various districts and especially the cemetery. Our tour guide, Butch, has a vast knowledge of local history. Answered everyone’s questions. So much more to NOLA than just the French Quarter.

Guys, this is a must not miss! We took two tours, the swamp tour and the city and cemetery. On the swamp tour we saw so much wildlife and our Captain, Tim, was so knowledgeable and friendly. On the city and cemetery tour, our guide Karen took us all around the city and taught us so much about the history of New Orleans. We got to go into a cemetery and even visited a distillery. Definitely check it out!

100K+

100,000+ Five-Star Google Reviews

Cajun Encounters is the most-reviewed tour company in New Orleans and one of the most-reviewed tour operators in the United States. Our 5.0-star average across more than 100,000 Google reviews reflects a consistent commitment to exceptional guide quality, vehicle comfort, and overall tour experience. Reviews are not incentivized — they are earned by delivering a tour worth talking about.

25+

25+ Years of Experience

Since our founding, Cajun Encounters has operated continuously as a New Orleans tour company, building relationships with local historians, cemetery preservation organizations, and the communities we visit. Our institutional knowledge allows our guides to go deeper than any script-based tour — they can answer questions about architecture, history, food, music, and local culture on the fly because they live it every day.

AC

Climate-Controlled Comfort

New Orleans weather can be intense — summer heat and humidity make walking tours and open-air hop-on-hop-off buses uncomfortable at best. Our buses feature powerful air conditioning, air-ride suspension for a smooth ride over New Orleans' notoriously uneven streets, and seamless panoramic windows that give every seat a clear, unobstructed view. You see more and stay comfortable the entire time.

Sightseeing

Guided Sightseeing — Not a Hop-On Hop-Off

Unlike hop-on hop-off buses where you navigate stops alone with a pre-recorded audio guide, our New Orleans bus tours provide a live, local guide for the entire experience. Your guide rides with you, points out landmarks as you pass them, shares stories you will not find in any guidebook, and leads you through the cemetery stop. The difference between a recorded narration and a live guide who grew up in New Orleans is the difference between reading about a city and actually understanding it.
